Genesis 3 narrates the fall of Adam and Eve: the serpent’s temptation, the eating of the forbidden fruit, and the consequences that follow — labor, pain, conflict between human beings, and death. Every theodicy in the Western tradition either builds on this story or argues against it. The question it raises has never been answered to everyone’s satisfaction: if God created humanity good, what went wrong, and why did God permit it?
